EXAMPLES OF RECENT CONSULTATIONS:

Goal: Budget-Friendly Bathroom Solutions

Cathy and John, a couple in their late 50s, wanted suggestions for how to make it easier for John - who has several chronic, worsening conditions - to get in and out of their shower/tub combo safely. They asked for budget-friendly ideas because eventually they plan to install a walk-in shower.

For them, we started small: adding a tub bench and non-slip coating to the shower floor, installing grab bars around the tub area and on the wall outside the shower. These simple additions made immediate improvements in safety without breaking the bank. We also discussed future plans for installing a roll-in shower when finances allowed.

Goal: Navigating Wheelchair Accessibility

The Ross family faced an entirely different and more urgent situation. Mr. Ross, an active man in his late 70s, fractured his leg and required a wheelchair for several months due to restrictions on putting weight on the injured leg during the healing process. His family sought assistance in determining the most suitable door for a ramp that would enable him to maneuver independently. Residing on a corner lot in town, available space for a longer ramp was constrained by public sidewalks that the ramp could not cross.

In this case, we explored various options such as temporary metal ramps that could be adjusted according to space constraints and recommended simple ways to widen doorways by a few more inches where possible. This allowed Mr. Ross to move freely within his home while maintaining compliance with local regulations.

Goal: Achieving First-Floor Living Arrangements

For the Mohler family, the challenge was creating first-floor living arrangements for their husband/dad who has Parkinson's disease since it’s getting difficult for him to climb the three stairs to the bathroom and thirteen stairs to his bedroom.

We looked at converting an existing extra sitting room into a bedroom and extending a laundry room to include a fully accessible bathroom to maximize safety and convenience giving Mr. Mohler greater independence and making it easier for Mrs. Mohler to help with his care.
